چکیده
Interleukin-1 (IL-l) has protean effects in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These effects include production of prostaglandins and collagenase from rheumatoid fibroblasts as well as upregulation of adhesion molecule expression on these cells. IL-1 can activate monocytes and neutrophils, as well as promote the growth of fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Recently, a novel interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IRAP) has been isolated, purified, cloned, and expressed, which may modulate the effects of IL-l. In this study, we present data demonstrating that macrophages isolated from human RA synovial tissues express both IL-1 and IRAP genes. In addition, RA synovial tissue macrophages and lining cells display IL-l and IRAP antigenie expression by immunohistochemistry. In contrast, osteoarthritis synovial tissues, as compared to RA, have fewer IL-1 and IRAP-positive macrophages. Thus, the production of IL-1 balanced by IRAP may affect the joint destruction found in these diseases. o lwz Academic PRSS, IW.

Absence of a liver-specific membrane protein in a strain of chang cells.
A strain of Chang cells. derived from a human liver line, was examined for the presence of a liver-specific membrane protein (LSP). as described by Meyer zum Buschenfelde. Indirect immunofluorescence and antisera to human. rat, and rabbit LSP were used to demonstrate that LSP was present on isolated human, rat. and rabbit hepatocytes but not on the Chang cells. The results indicate that these C...

متن کاملThe two-way paradigm of transplantation immunology.
The events following organ transplantation require a reciprocal cell interaction which includes both the conventional host-versus-graft reaction and a graft-versus-host component. With all successful transplantation, both graft and recipient become genetic composites. Where donors were available, chimerism has been confirmed in 30-year kidney-recipient survivors, as well as in several liver and...
